Photographers And Their Tattoos by Stella Kramer

My tattoo story
at "Photographers And Their Tattoos" by Stella Kramer

“I got it as a birthday gift to myself in 2008. It has two meanings.

First it is a box with a pinhole, which is the basic form of a camera. Second, my tattoo is a reference to the box drawn by the pilot in Saint-Exupery’s “Little Prince.”  As the Little Prince is free to see the sheep in any way he prefers, a camera is simply a box to contain my imagination.

I see this tattoo whenever I photograph. It is on my left arm and its shape becomes perfect only when I hold my camera with the right hand, and my left extends to support the lens barrel.”

Detroit Center for Contemporary Photography : : THE FAMILY EXHIBITION

Added on by Hye-Ryoung Min.

The image of my niece, Yeonsoo has been accepted into the show, Family at Detroit Center for Contemporary Photography juried by Aline Smithson from Lenscratch!

January 12th and will run through February 2, 2013.

Opening reception 6:30 pm -9:30 pm

"The Photographic Dialogue has never been so filled conversation about family--interpreting ourselves and those we love through images is an important way of creating universal stories. Photographers today have become participant observers of their own familial settings, reflecting a reality and insight of those they share their lives with. We are turning our lenses homeward, to capture worlds that are familiar, yet charged with history and emotion. This exhibition is about seeing beyond the front door and the birthday party smiles, it's about the pathos and poignancy of parenthood, of aging parents, of loss, of joy, of loneliness...it's about all the things that make us human in the every day drama played out in our own backyards."

It is time to reveal the winners of the Conscientious Portfolio Competition 2012. This year, the jury consisted of Michel Mallard (creative director/founder, Michel Mallard Studio), Robert Lyons (photographer; director, Hartford Photography MFA Program), and myself. Without further ado, the winners are…

Robert picked Hye-Ryoung Min’s Channel 247 (see top image):

I first got it down to five different portfolios. But I kept coming back to Hye-Ryoung Min’s, whose work struck me the first time I looked at it, and it has only grown since. The images really suggest time beyond the moment of the picture. They are well composed, and each image suggests an interesting situation. The formal aspects seem to hold the group together. Although at first one feels as if these are “surveillance” images - at least by the framing, and by things that obscure the images - one quickly is able to see how they are much more.
